The Bengaluru police Monday apprehended three minors aged around 14-15 for allegedly pelting stones at a religious procession at Jagajeevanram (JJ) Nagar Sunday evening.

The alleged incident occurred around 8 pm near VS Garden when devotees were pulling a deity’s chariot as part of the procession from the Om Shakti temple. According to the police, the stone pelting caused head injuries to a girl who was participating in the procession. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, the police said.

Following the alleged stone pelting, tension rose in the area as a large group of devotees gathered outside the JJ Nagar police station. The crowd demanded strict legal action against those responsible for the violence.

Senior police officers intervened to pacify the protesters and ordered increased security measures throughout the locality to maintain law and order.

The JJ Nagar police registered an FIR under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act Section 3(2) [offence punishable under the general criminal law against a member of an SC or ST community on the ground of their caste or tribe] and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 118(1) (causing grievous hurt) and 196(2) (offences involving criminal intimidation or threats of a serious nature).

After conducting a detailed spot inspection, the police identified the three accused minors and apprehended them. Further investigations are underway, the police said.

The Opposition Janata Dal (Secular) took to X and condemned the incident, calling it a failure of the Congress government headed by Siddaramaiah.

“The incident of stone-pelting on women devotees during the Om Shakti procession in JJ Nagar, Chamarajpet, is condemnable. Under the appeasement-driven politics of the @INCKarnataka government, Hindus are no longer receiving adequate protection. While the procession was underway, miscreants deliberately hurled stones, causing head injuries to two young women. Law and order in the state has completely collapsed, clearly exposing the administrative failure of the @siddaramaiah government,” the post said.
