The 32-year-old Norwegian charged with going on a killing spree in which at least 92 people died is a former member of a populist anti-immigration party who wrote blogs attacking multi-culturalism and Islam.

The attacker was identified as Anders Behring Breivik,a blond and blue-eyed Norwegian who expressed right-wing and anti-Muslim views on the Internet.

Norwegian news agency NTB said Breivik legally owned several firearms and belonged to a gun club. He ran an agricultural firm growing vegetables, which could have helped him secure large amounts of fertiliser,a potential ingredient in bombs.

Believed to have grown up in Oslo,he studied at the Oslo School of Management, which offers degrees and post-graduate courses,BBC reported.

Website entries under Breiviks name criticised European policies of trying to accommodate the cultures of different ethic groups, and claimed a significant minority of young British Muslims back radical Islamic militancy.

When did multi-culturalism cease to be an ideology designed to deconstruct European culture, traditions, identity and nation-states? said one entry, posted on February 2,2010 on the right-wing website http://www.document.no.

According to two studies,13 per cent of young British Muslims aged between 15 and 25 support al-Qaeda ideology, said another entry dated February 16 last year.

Police searched an apartment in an Oslo suburb on Friday, but neighbours said it belonged to Breiviks mother,a nice lady.

Deputy Police Chief Roger Andresen said the man in custody had described himself on Facebook as leaning towards right-wing Christianity.

Breivik had been a member of the Progress Party, the second largest in parliament, head of communications Fredrik Farber said. Breivik was a member from 2004 to 2006 and in its youth party from 1997-2006/2007. The Progress Party wants tighter restrictions on immigration, while the centre-left government backs multi-culturalism.

Progress leader Siv Jensen stressed he had left the party. He is not a member anymore, she said. It makes me very sad that he was a member at an earlier point. He was never very active.
