Young Carnatic singer Nisha P Rajagopal won the first Hindu Saregama MS Subbulakshmi Award recently. She received the award from the former President of India Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at an event in Chennai. The award is meant to encourage upcoming,promising Carnatic musicians every year. As part of the honour,Nisha will have her own album that will be produced and marketed by Saregama,four concerts organised in different cities,a television performance and a radio air play.
The award ceremony was followed by Nishas performance. She began with a tribute to MS Subbulakshmi and sang a song whose lyrics were penned by Kalam. She followed it up with some of Subbulakshmis most popular songs.
The jury comprising renowned Carnatic singer Sangeeta Kalanidhi Vedavalli,eminent journalist and playwright Gowri Ramnarayan and musician and composer Sri Rajkumar Bharati were also felicitated on the occasion. We chose Nisha P Rajagopal for her excellence as a young artist with a radiant voice,her commitment to an impeccable tradition and to the values of classicism,while fulfilling the demands of performing classical Carnatic music in this contemporary milieu,said Gouri.
