As the Congress-NCP alliance prepares to form the government after winning enough seats without outside support, the NCP is likely to change its state chief including R R Patil in the state Cabinet instead. His likely successors include Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil or Govindrao Adik.

Patil was the deputy chief minister, also heading the Home portfolio, but had to quit after 26/11. Later,he was made the state president of the party. Sources said that Patil may stage a comeback in the next government as a minister or even as the deputy chief minister.

It is possible that R R Patil will be included in the Cabinet. The Congress, after sacking Vilasrao Deshmukh as the chief minister had later nominated him to the Rajya Sabha and even made him a Union minister, a senior NCP leader said. If R R Patil joins the Cabinet, well have a new state chief.

He pointed out that the strong contenders for the post of the state party chief were rural development minister Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil and the NCPs chief of election campaign committee Govindrao Adik. Both are in political wilderness and need to be rehabilitated, he said.

The NCP is also yet to announce the name of the next deputy chief minister. Sources say that party chief Sharad Pawar may no longer want Chhagan Bhujbal as the Deputy Chief Minister as one of his sons has got elected as an MP and the other,an MLA. Pawar may want to pacify Bhujbals detractors within the party, sources said.

They said that the strong contenders for the post included R R Patil,Jayant Patil and Ajit Pawar.
