NAC members protest against Plan panel

Three members of the Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council Aruna Roy,Jean Dreze and Harsh Mander.

Three members of the Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council NAC Aruna Roy,Jean Dreze and Harsh Mander took to the streets today to protest against the governments decision to impose a cap on BPL families based on the Planning Commissions estimates for social welfare schemes of the government.

The planners and economists have fixed the poverty level at ridiculously low levels. Even the revised estimate of about 42 per cent rural poverty will exclude a substantial proportion of poor and vulnerable people, said NAC member Harsh Mander.

The protest, organised under the banner of Right to Food Campaign, came in the backdrop of the government giving a green signal for a nationwide BPL survey based on the poverty ratios fixed by the Planning Commission for each state.

With various public social welfare benefits like food guarantee, health insurance,old-age pension getting linked to BPL,this very minimalist proportion would amount to excluding a large section of poor and hungry people from public welfare schemes. Universalisation of public welfare services is the option to avoid it, Mander said.
