Amid debate over viability of the food security law,Madhya Pradesh has reduced its target of wheat procurement by five lakh MT.
The state, which has had an unprecedented run in foodgrain production over the recent years, had set a target of 115 lakh MT but has now scaled it down to 110 lakh MT.
Three days after procurement began in four divisions, the government has revised the estimates, citing cancellation of over 35,000 fake registrations. The crop acreage has also been reduced. As many as 14.33 lakh farmers have registered themselves with procurement agencies, and get SMS alerts about when to turn up at procurement centres. This time they will also get SMS alerts when money is deposited in their bank accounts.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Paras Jain said fake registrations had been cancelled after field verification, but said the government would not take action against those responsible. Chairman of M P Food and Civil Supplies Corporation Ramesh Sharma said the revised estimates did not amount to much. Differing with the minister,he claimed registrations were cancelled because many farmers had registered themselves at more than one centre.
