The three-member committee set up by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to examine the validity of recommendations made by the Medical Council of India MCI for renewing the licence of Gian Sagar Medical College in Patiala submitted its report to the ministry on Monday.

Saying that it is an institute of good infrastructure, the committee is learnt to have found that there were no major grounds on which the college could have been denied recognition. The need for this inspection came up following the arrest of MCI chief Dr Ketan Desai for allegedly striking a Rs 2 crore deal to allow new courses in the private medical college. A New Delhi-based middleman and two men associated with the college were also arrested last month.

Sources in the ministry said the medical college fulfills the criteria of land and building and keeping in view the factual position, things were found to be quite adequate by the three-member committee headed by Additional Secretary K Desiraju.

While no institute is perfect, the important things like infrastructure and faculty was found to be in place. There was nothing alarmingly missing from the college for which it could not have been permitted to take next batch. In fact it was seen that the infrastructure has added over the years, added a source.

The team visited the college last week to check if the MCI was renewing the licence without taking into account the objections raised by the inspection committee.
