Green Enclave sewage crisis: 500 KLD portable | STP to be installed immediately, says Mohali mayor

Acting swiftly on the serious issue of untreated sewage discharge in Green Enclave near Ballomajra village, the Mohali Municipal Corporation has initiated immediate remedial measures, Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu said on Wednesday.

The mayor said that the action follows proceedings in the Vijay Kumar Pathania vs State of Punjab & Others pending before the National Green Tribunal (NGT). To address the matter urgently, a joint meeting was convened involving the Deputy Commissioner, SAS Nagar (Mohali), the Chief Administrator of GMADA, and officials of the Municipal Corporation Mohali, during which an immediate solution was finalised.

Mayor Jeeti Sidhu said that Green Enclave and adjoining areas have recently come within the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation, making it the civic body’s responsibility to ensure a clean and healthy environment for residents. As part of the plan, a 500 KLD (kilolitres per day) capacity portable sewage treatment plant (STP) will be installed. He added that GMADA has already prepared the detailed cost estimate for the project.

The project will include the laying of pipelines, installation of the STP, its commissioning and stabilisation, along with five years of operation and maintenance. The total estimated cost stands at Rs 382.93 lakh, which will be funded by GMADA, while the execution of the work will be undertaken by the Municipal Corporation.
Reiterating the civic body’s commitment, Mayor Sidhu said the Municipal Corporation will comply with all directions issued by the National Green Tribunal and ensure that residents do not face any inconvenience. He added that the initiative marks a significant step towards environmental protection and sustainable wastewater management in the area.
