A 52-year-old man was killed after being allegedly run over by the cavalcade of Bihar Rural Development Minister Nitish Mishra at Phulparas,Madhubani,on Saturday evening.

Police said the incident happened around 5.30 pm when a cavalcade on NH-57 hit Padmalal Thakur,a carpenter, near Phulparas Referral Hospital.

Thakur’s son Balkrishna Thakur said in the FIR that minister Nitish Mishra’s vehicle (BR01 PC 9009) knocked down his father and an escort vehicle (BR32 D 7231) of the Bihar Police ran him over, killing him on the spot.

Madhubani Superintendent of Police Saurav Kumar said: “We have been questioning drivers and occupants of the two vehicles identified in the FIR. Once we are satisfied,a case would be lodged against the errant drivers.”

However,Mishra told The Indian Express: “Phulparas police station has spoken to my driver and taken photograph of my vehicle. We are fully cooperating with the police. But let me make it clear that I was at a Nirmali function at 5.30 pm,around the time when the accident occurred.”

“I am a responsible citizen. I am not callous not to acknowledge any accident by my car. There were many cavalcades with red beacons plying on that route to attend the cremation of the late minister Hari Narain Shah last evening,” he added.

The police said they had been examining the VIPs’ schedules to find out which cavalcade hit the victim.
