On his first visit to India after his re-election,President Hamid Karzai on Monday discussed reintegration of some elements of the Taliban into the mainstream in Afghanistan during his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Karzai, who also invited Singh to visit Kabul, discussed the upcoming Afghanistan peace consultative Jirga where the Afghan government will seek advice on how to move ahead with the reconciliation effort with some elements of the Taliban.

While India has been saying Taliban needs to be dealt with as a single entity and distinctions cannot be made between its various factions,Karzai made it clear during his meeting with Singh that the reconciliation process was on track.

We discussed the upcoming Afghanistan peace consultative Jirga which will comprise all the people of Afghanistan from all walks of life to advise the Afghan government on how to move forward towards reintegration and reconciling of those elements of the Taliban and others who have accepted the Afghan Constitution, who are not part of al-Qaeda,and who would not be part of any terrorist network, Karzai added.

India reiterated its commitment to the reconstruction effort in Afghanistan.

While condemning the attacks on Indians in Kabul in February as the handiwork of those who do not wish to see the emergence of a strong, independent and pluralistic Afghanistan,Singh assured Karzai that Indias efforts would not be deterred by such acts.
