In a bid to make up for the shortcomings in intelligence gathering,Karnataka CM K Siddaramaiah has mooted a specialist intelligence agency within the state police with separate recruitment and training.

We are very poor in intelligence gathering. We are considering creating a separate cadre of intelligence officers who are trained specially for the work, he said while addressing senior police officers for the first time after taking over as CM in May.

How to prevent offences must become a priority for the police. There is a need to focus on intelligence in this context, Siddaramaiah said.

The chief minister called on the police to crack down on illegal activities, including bars allowing live bands to perform without the necessary permits, gambling and betting dens, use of mobile phones in prisons and organised crime.
