Highway crash kills 10 on way to Mumbai

Ten persons,most of them returning to Mumbai after a visit to their ancestral village,Vavarhire in Satara district,were killed on Monday morning in an accident on NH4.

The cruiser jeep they were travelling in burst a tyre,rammed into a container near a new tunnel at Katraj Ghat,and was sent spinning up and down a number of times before it came to rest,wrecked. Two of the 19 persons in the jeep had their heads severed. The 10 dead included a year-old boy and three women; the nine injured included three children. Two of the injured are in critical condition.

The Highway Police had recently blacklisted the stretch on NH4 where the accident took place.

D SP Pune rural Ravindra Pardeshi said most of the victims hailed from Vavarhire village but were living in Mumbai and its suburbs. They had gone to their village for a religious event.

Those killed were BEST driver Jagannath Dhope 30,his wife Vaishali,22,Gajrabai Mahadev Kapse,45,Ravindra Kakasaheb Dhok,25,Seema Satish Dhope,25,her one-year-old son Shivam,Ramchandra Shankar Dhope,87,Balasaheb Laxman Dhok,54,his son Sandip,25,and the driver of the jeep,Nitin Rupanvar,22.

The injured have been admitted to Sassoon Hospital.
