Dense fog blankets parts of North India; at least 10 flights cancelled at Delhi Airport

Weather Update Today: A thick layer of fog engulfed parts of North India early Wednesday as cold wave continued to intensify in the region, causing delays and cancellation of flights and train services because of low visibility.

At least ten flights were cancelled and over 270 were delayed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, as visibility dipped to around 100 metres at 6 am on Wednesday amid dense fog, according to data shared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The visibility is likely to improve to 400 metres from 8:30 am, with fog conditions reducing to moderate levels.

In Delhi, the air quality continued to remain in the ‘very poor’ category, with residents waking up to a think blanket of fog, sharply reducing visibility. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 349 around 5:30 am, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The minimum temperature was recorded to be 12 degrees Celsius in the Capital.

Several trains were also delayed due to dense fog in the region, causing inconvenience to passengers, as observed at the New Delhi railway station.

Skies over India Gate and Kartavya Path were also enveloped in a thick layer of fog, as temperatures dipped further. The Indian Navy contingent were seen rehearsing for the Republic Day parade amid the dark skies early today, PTI reported.

Several parts of the national Capital recorded ‘very poor’ AQI levels, according to the CPCB data. This comes as the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has placed all actions under GRAP Stage-IV in Delhi-NCR.

Avalanche warning in J&K

An avalanche warning has been issued in five districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday in view of heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of the Union territory this week, officials told news agency PTI.

The low danger avalanche warning has been issued for Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch and Ramban districts. The avalanche is likely to occur 2,800 metres above these districts during the next 24 hours, they said.

People have been asked to avoid avalanche-prone areas and follow official advisories, the report stated.

Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, dense fog engulfed Ayodhya as the cold wave intensified in the city. The IMD has forecast a minimum temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, and issued a yellow alert.

A dense layer of fog also enveloped Kanpur, where the IMD issued a yellow alert and forecast a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius.

Moradabad too woke up to dense fog, with the IMD forecasting a minimum temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, and issuing an orange alert for the city.

However, the iconic Taj Mahal was visible after experiencing days of foggy weather, as visitors rejoiced at the site early today, news agency PTI reported.

The IMD, in its forecast, stated that the visibility may reduce to 400 metres between 6:30 am and 8:30 am, as moderate fog conditions were observed over skies at Lucknow Airport. The visibility at the airport is likely to improve to 800 metres between 9:30 am and 11:30 am today.

Punjab and Haryana

In Haryana’s Ambala, dense fog continued to prevail over its skies, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert in the district. The minimum temperature is likely to be 11 degrees Celsius, the IMD stated.

In Punjab’s Moga district, the weather improved significantly on Wednesday, as clear skies prevailed over the area, leading to slightly improved visibility, PTI reported.
