A head warder,posted at the Sonipat District Jail in Haryana,was arrested on Monday for facilitating the sensational jailbreak,in which eight dreaded criminals had escaped last month.
With the arrest of the warder,Jitender,14 people have so far been arrested for helping the inmates flee.
According to police,on January 18,Jitender had supplied sleeping pills to the eight inmates.
They had used these sleeping pills to drug their other fellow inmates. Our investigations have revealed that Jitender had developed a strong bond with an inmate,Surender,who escaped. He had been providing Surender and other inmates drugs on a regular basis. Moreover,Jitender had been found indulging in other illegal activities, said a police officer.
On January 18,the eight criminals escaped by first cutting the iron grills of their barrack door and then scaling a 20-feet high boundary wall with the help of a rope.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had taken a suo moto cognisance of the case. An independent inquiry conducted by a high court judge had also found several irregularities in the incident.
So far,the Sonipat district police have seized two motorbikes and a tractor,which was used by the accused,after escaping from the jail.
