The fierce competition to grab a market-share in this business has made mobile telephony companies rope in almost every actor worth his salt to tap into this burgeoning market.

Not too long ago,FMCG products such as colas and soaps were the mainstay of celebrity endorsements. Until mobile telephony exploded in India. The success story of mobile phones can be gauged from the fact that India has over 600 million connections. The fierce competition to grab a market-share in this business has made companies rope in almost every actor worth his salt to tap into this burgeoning market.

Samsung and Aamir

Samsung India announced Aamir Khan as its brand ambassador in 2008 when the company announced the launch of five new phones Samsung SGH i450,SGH-G800,i550,D880,J210.

Talking about having Aamir on board,H. B. Lee,President amp; CEO,Samsung South-West Asia Headquarters,said,The Samsung brand stands for qualities of innovation,change,discovery,self-expression and excellence in performance. And these very same qualities are epitomised by Aamir Khan,whose quality and depth of work as well as versatility as an actor,have made him a much-loved and respected actor in India today. We are very proud and privileged to have him as our brand ambassador.

Today,Samsung phones have one of the highest product-recalls in the cluttered mobile handset space,with some credit due to Aamir too.

Micromax signs up Akshay and Twinkle

Akshay Kumar8217;s wife Twinkle Khanna has been signed by Micromax Mobiles to endorse the company8217;s latest brand of mobiles called Micromax Bling Q55. It is a square clamshell,loaded with tons of features.

The phone features an innovative sliding QWERTY keyboard studded with Swarowski crystals. A perfect phone for girls,it features a compact mirror on the handset as well and comes at an affordable price of Rs 5500. Akshay Kumar endorses the brand8217;s other lineup of phones.

The company recently shot a television commercial featuring Khanna and is currently being aired across channels.

Amitabh Bachchan8217;s Zen moment

Zen Mobile,an Indian mobilephone company,recently roped in actor Amitabh Bachchan as its brand ambassador to endorse and promote the products offered by the company.

8220;Bachchan is a quintessential mix of charisma and style with a mass-appeal,which our brand stands for. We are confident that our association with him will create a deep impact on the minds of our target audience and help our brand and products meet success,8221; said Deepesh Gupta,managing director,Zen Mobile.

I hope my association with the brand will take it closer to people and they would be able to appreciate the brilliance and innovation of its handsets, said Bachchan in a press statement.

John,Abhay and Genelia on LG Cookie

In March 2010,LG Electronics India Pvt. Ltd. LGEIL announced the appointment of John Abraham,Genelia D8217;Souza and Abhay Deol as its brand ambassadors for LG mobile phones in India.

These leading youth icons and successful film celebrities represent LG brand values of excellence in performance which leads to seamless brand fitment, a company release said. The company also released a series of advertisements with the three actors in the last few months to endorse the companys different range of mobilephones.

Kareenas arm candy

In April this year,Sony Ericsson unveiled Kareena Kapoor as its brand ambassador. The actor will endorse the feature-rich XPERIA X10,XPERIA X10 mini,Vivaz and Vivaz Pro handsets.

Kareena matches the level of energy,vibrancy,passion and fun associated with Sony Ericsson,and thereby elevates the aspiration value of the brand. Nokia rocks with Shah Rukh and Priyanka

Circa 2007,Nokia India,then leader in the mobile telecommunications,tied up with Shah Rukh Khan,for a new brand campaign to connect with its consumers. In many ways,it was the beginning of the acknowledgement of New Media as a reckoning force.

On choosing SRK ,Devinder Kishore,Director Marketing,Nokia India said,There is a complete synergy between the Nokia brand and personification of the Shah Rukh brand both have a youth connect,are trendy,technology-savvy and most importantly symbolise trust.

Nokia further enhanced its brand appeal when it signed Priyanka Chopra as brand ambassador. Alongside the launch,Priyanka also rolled out an interesting consumer engagement initiative called Pictures get us talkingthat combined website and mobilephones in an unique marketing initiative.

Saifs and Bipasha8217;s Wynn-win deal

Wynn Telecom Limited forayed into the mobile handset market this year with Saif Ali Khan and Bipasha Basu as its brand ambassadors for their brand Wynncom. I am excited to represent brand as it stands for cutting-edge innovation and style. I admire the brands attitude and style and relate to it closely as it is refreshingly trendy and fast, Saif Ali Khan said in a press release issued by the company.

On her behalf,Bipasha said,I chose to be associated with Wynncom because I feel that this brand reflects my attitude in life. I was impressed with their entire range of handsets that successfully capture the true essence of todays youth.

Wynn Telecom Ltd is a subsidiary of SAR Group and was launched in May and has targeted itself to be among the top three Indian handsets brands within next one year. The recently-launched handsets are a mix of utility,multimedia and Qwerty phones with prices ranging from Rs 1500 to Rs 5000.
