The domineering attitude of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs and security personnel accompanying Barack Obama during his visit has not gone down well with New Delhi.
Sources said Gibbs violated the agreed pool size of photographers when US and Indian mediapersons were taken for the mandatory photo-op at Hyderabad House on Monday before the meeting between Obama and PM Manmohan Singh.
Normally,a pool size is agreed upon to click pictures or record footage before the talks between heads of states and governments. In this case,a pool size of five photographers and cameramen from each side had been agreed upon.
However,Gibbs reportedly wanted to bring in nine photographers from the US press corps. When Indian security officers objected,he threw his weight around and threatened that he would pull out Obama from the talks. Even intervention of Indian diplomats did not get Gibbs around.
In Mumbai, before First Lady Michelle Obamas visit to the University of Mumbai,a stand-off was witnessed between the US Secret Service and the police after the Americans called in their commando unit, the Counter Assault Team CAT, to stop the Mumbai Police nodal officer from entering the university. This and a few other incidents where the US agencies violated the protocol line will now be sent by the Mumbai Police Commissionerate to the state agencies, which will take it up with the Centre.
