After the furore on Monday, four MPs with questions listed against their names were missing during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. While off the record, many MPs claimed absenteeism during Question Hour had a lot to do with its structure where it was difficult to take up more than five or six questions, they didnt say anything when asked if they had a duty to listen to other MPs as well.

Neeraj Shekhar and Sushila Saroj of the SP,BJPs Poonam Veljibhai Jaat and Congresss Vikrambhai Maadam were absent when their names were taken by the Speaker during the Question Hour. SP leaders said Saroj was unwell, while Jaat said she had to stay back in her constituency due to some pressing work. Shekhar was seen in the House later during the day.

While the Congress leadership has taken a serious view of the absentee MPs on Monday,BJP leader L K Advani,at Tuesdays Parliamentary Party meeting, demanded to know about the MPs who were not present during the Question Hour in the House on Monday. A BJP leader said only two MPs from the party were absent during the Question Hour,a far bigger number of absentee MPs came from other parties, and there were no plans of action against them. They would be asked to be careful, the leader added.

Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj suggested that the system where it is normally not possible to accommodate more than six questions, was to blame.

JDUs Rajiv Ranjan Singh Lallan, one of the absentee MPs on Monday, concurred and demanded a relook at the system. It was a Monday and I reached LS late, coming as I was from my home state. The real solution to the problem, however, would be slotting more time for the Question Hour, two hours maybe, he told The Indian Express.
