Five days after he escaped,serial rapist back in jail

The police,who had tapped all possible contact persons of Jaishankar in Karnataka on the basis of inputs from intelligence agencies in Tamil Nadu,laid a trap after they learned he had got in touch with a former friend.

This friend,a police informer,assured Jaishankar access to lawyers and a motorcycle as he had asked,Auradkar said. The informer asked him to come to a particular place to collect the bike and he was arrested when he came there, he added.

Jaishankar told the police he hid in abandoned buildings,a temple,a school and the house of a person known to him after escaping from jail in the early hours of September 1.

He has,however,been less forthright about how he escaped. The police suspect he had used a duplicate key to escape from his cell in the hospital ward. He then climbed the 20 feet high wall near the gate and walked on it to reach the outer wall. He scaled it using a bed sheet and a bag strap as rope and jumped down to the other side. The jailbreak was meticulously planned over two months and took an hour to execute,the police said.

We need time to interrogate him in detail to know what exactly happened,how he escaped and where he was till his arrest, Auradkar said. He will produced in court and we will seek custody for further investigation.

Jaishankar was wearing the same clothes at the time of his arrest that he wore on the night of his escape and not a police uniform as earlier reported,the police said. He has injured his feet and hands,his ankles are swollen and is complaining of a back pain,the police said.

Auradkar wouldnt say if Jaishankar had inside help. He,as well as Additional DGP,Prisons,K V Gagandeep,also did not clarify how Jaishankar got the duplicate key,which was found in the garden of the prison.

Jaishankar is wanted for 19 cases of rape and attempts to rape in Tamil Nadu. He is also accused of raping and murdering a policewoman in Salem.
