Taking stock of the ongoing works at Hancock bridge, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has directed officials to complete all remaining works in a timely manner. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), Abhijit Bangar said that tenders on all pending components must be floated immediately. Connecting Mazgaon and Dongri, the crucial Hancock bridge was demolished in 2016 owing to its dilapidated state. After commencing redevelopment works in 2020, the civic body opened one portion of the bridge partially in 2022. However, another arm has remained stalled owing to technical challenges.
In a review meeting convened by civic officials alongside officials from the Mumbai traffic police and railways, Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) took stock of the current project status, while directing officials to expedite works.
According to Bangar, construction of the bridge over the railway area is complete while work on the approach roads is partially executed. However, officials said that rehabilitation of some cessed buildings of the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) is yet to be executed. During the meeting, Bangar directed officials to complete the rehabilitation process of the affected buildings alongside some commercial establishments.
Meanwhile, the BMC is looking to open the new east-west overbridge at Sion for vehicular traffic by June 2026. Pegged at a cost of Rs 60 crore, the new bridge seeks to improve connectivity between Eastern Express Highway and Lal Bahadur Shashtri Marg (LBS).
During the meeting Bangar directed officials concerned to complete all works on the new bridge by May 31, 2026. Currently, work on the girder fabrication is underway at Nagpur and Ambala.
According to the civic body, work on the subway at LBS Marg is slated to be completed by the end of this month, while work on the second underpass along the Dharavi portion is likely to be completed by February. Following this, work on launching girders over the railway bridge will be initiated in March.
Bangar added that work on the approach roads to Dharavi and LBS Marg will be completed by April 15, following which the eastern side of the road will be commissioned.
“If all timelines are adhered to, the bridge will be fully ready by May 31, 2026, and it will be opened to traffic from June 1, 2026,” said a senior official.
