The first three episodes of Kaun Banega Crorepati 4 have been like detox for me especially after the onslaught of various reality shows that I have been subjected to in the last decade. I confess,I never really tuned into KBC 2 and 3 a couple of episodes of the latter,yes,to check out Shah Rukh Khan but by and large,last Monday night when Amitabh Bachchan gently cajoled me saying,Chaliye,aap aur hum khelte hain Kaun Banega Crorepati,there was no way I could resist.

My blood pressure was normal and I was calm and quiet as I watched Bachchan go through the new,improved KBC4 with some entertaining guests the woman from Allahabad was a riot. Im sure,she could land a role in some Hindi serial soon. I didnt get worked up at all as I would watching other reality shows,where I am invariably drawn into the messy politics of loud and boisterous or completely loony/inane antics of contestants of other shows on other channels. There has been no respite whatsoever from these shows in the past no,switching off the TV set was never really an option and so the new season of KBC is indeed a clichéd whiff of fresh air.

After all the unreal reality shows,to see something that is healthy for your grey cells is indeed a welcome break. Sure,one and a half hours of it is a bit much I know,there is stiff competition to beat but Bachchan and the contestants,and not to forget the celebrity experts do make the viewing a pleasurable ride.

I like the small changes that have been introduced like the timer and the double dip lifeline though Im not too sure of the experts opinion,especially when someone like Charu Sharma gave most of the options as probable answers to a confused contestant! Isnt an expert supposed to make things easier?

The opening episode had to be zingy and sparkling considering it coincided with Bachchans birthday. But a video showing him dancing to Khaike paan banaraswala and spouting lines from some of his memorable hits stuck out like a sore thumb. Though it made for entertaining viewing,it looked like a deliberate attempt to jazz things up when it was not required at all. It didnt have any connection with the nature of the show.

Having said that,KBC is good viewing alternative,now only if they didnt stretch its duration!

Verdict: Watch it…your brain could do with some rejuvenation.
