Objecting to BSPs criticism of its order to cover statues of Mayawati and elephants till the conclusion of polls in UP,the Election Commission has warned BSP that it may relook its earlier decision of not freezing its symbol.
The warning was delivered in writing to BSP general secretary Satish Mishra in response to his complaint about the order being one-sided,discriminatory,opposed to law and violative of Article 14 of the Constitution.
The EC has pointed out that while the BSP had earlier contended that the statues in public parks had nothing to do with the party and were built by the state government,Mishras letter admitted that they were built by the party.
In a press release on Wednesday, the Commission expressed concerns over Mayawatis remarks. While Commission takes all views about its working in its stride,it is truly disturbed that the CM of UP and national president of BSP,Ms. Mayawati, has cast serious aspersions on the Commission,in public,by attributing anti-Dalit and casteist motives to the Commissions Order, the EC said.
It expects a higher sense of responsibility and Constitutional decorum from major political parties and their leaders. It notes with concern such statements coming from those holding senior Constitutional positions, it added.
