Delays,apathy,graft erode credibility of govt,says Meira

Meira Kumar : Parliaments have to prove their trustworthiness by evocatively taking up popular issues.

The issues exercising people in India found their echo in the speech of Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar in Maldives Sunday as she said delays,apathy and corruption erode credibility of institutions,causing disillusionment and unrest.

Addressing the seventh conference of association of SAARC Speakers and parliamentarians in Male,Kumar said: Parliaments have to prove their trustworthiness by evocatively taking up popular issues. Hence,efforts must be made to ensure transparency and certainty of executive action.

Dwelling on the theme Strengthening Democracy in the South Asia Region through institutional development,she said,The existence of an impartial judiciary to uphold the rule of law and protect individual rights and liberty is equally important for sustaining democracy.
