With the Congress going all out to mollify DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, sending many senior leaders to call on him during his two-day stay in Delhi, the two parties appeared to have decided to paper over their differences and unease over Kanimozhis arrest in connection with the 2G spectrum scam. Meanwhile,Karunanidhi returned to Chennai on Tuesday without meeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Senior DMK leader T R Baalu said that Karunanidhi was very busy in Delhi and therefore, could not meet Sonia.

It is absolutely wrong to talk about a rift. There is no problem. He Karunanidhi had no time. He had to meet three-four lawyers. He was very busy. We are fighting a legal battle and at the end of the day we will emerge victorious, Baalu told The Indian Express.

Home Minister P Chidambaram,AICC general secretary in charge of the state Ghulam Nabi Azad,Union Minister V Narayansamy and party MP Jayanthi Natarajan called on the DMK patriarch over the past two days.

Emerging from his meeting with Karunanidhi on Tuesday,Azad said,Sonia Gandhi is concerned because Kanimozhi being a woman is in jail. The fact is that one cannot do anything. All these have no effect on DMK-Congress alliance. Karunanidhi is a man of political standing and also a man of political understanding. He knows well that the Supreme Court is monitoring the case and a special court is looking into it. He also knows the opinion of the Government of India,as it is not interfering in any of the cases, including the Kalmadi case. I am happy Karunanidhi understands it all. The Congress has no role to play here.

Jayanthi Natarajan said that Karunanidhi had told her that Kanimozhi was fine and she is prepared to fight the case legally.

On Tuesday, the Congress also rubbished Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaas allegation that the DMK was indirectly responsible for former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhis assassination.

One thing needs to be clearly understood. We are extremely sensitive on the issue of assassination of our leader. There should be no attempt to politicise such a dastardly incident. People should refrain from trying to politicise a tragedy of proportions which are undefinable, said Congress spokesman Manish Tewari.
