The tension between the Comptroller amp; Auditor General of India and the ruling dispensation looks set to escalate with the Congress learnt to be examining the option of moving a privilege motion in Parliament against the audit body for questioning the MPs right to comment.
How can the CAG,which is not even a part of legislative process, question the MPs right to speak and suggest that it could amount to contempt of the House? The Congress is seriously examining the option of moving a privilege motion against the CAG. What we are examining is whether the CAGs press release in this regard could be the basis for this, a senior UPA leader said here on Saturday.
On January 12,the CAG had issued a press release stating that making public comments on a matter under consideration of the PAC was highly improper and may even amount to contempt of House. This had come in reaction to Telecom Minister Kapil Sibals remarks about CAGs projection of Rs 1.76 lakh crore loss in 2G allocation being erroneous.
On Friday,Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan had come down heavily on the CAG saying that the nation has a right to know how its findings were leaked even before they were tabled in Parliament. Taking exception to the CAG release counselling restraint on the part of MPs on the ground that it could be improper,Natarajan had said,We are somewhat surprised8230; because this seems to contain a suggestion that MPs do not have a right to speak on any issues when CAG report is being examined by a Parliamentary committee. It was a very strong suggestion.
She said as far she knew there was no rule that prohibited an MP from speaking on an issue that is being considered by a committee.
