Reacting to the latest attack on a 23-year-old Indian student in Melbourne,the Congress asked the Government to take 8220;more effective steps8221; to prevent such incidents. 8220;The Government has taken steps on the issue,but unfortunately,such incidents are still taking place,8221; AICC spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said here on Monday.
Asked whether the Centre had failed in its diplomatic initiative,he said,8221;No,the Government has tried its best. We only want the Government to take more steps as the incidents are continuing.8221;
Raising the pitch for action to protect Indian students in Australia,the BJP,for its part,said a Parliamentary delegation should be sent to the country. 8220;When we hear of Indian students being hit with a screw-driver,our hearts sink. But our Mission in Australia says it cannot do anything as there are only eight personnel in the staff,8221; Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said,taking part in the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President for her Address.
Stating that the BJP8217;s concern was the safety of the Indian diaspora and not the strength of the Mission staff,she demanded that a delegation of young Parliamentarians be sent to Australia to send across a message of support to the Indian community there.
In the second incident within a fortnight,23-year-old Indian student Kamal Jit was beaten up by a group of youth. Jit is the 11th Indian to be attacked within a month in Australia. He was found in an injured state by another Indian student on Sunday.
