Certified EVMs for TN bypolls

Following allegations by the AIADMK that DMK and the PMK rigged Electronic Voting Machines EVMs during Lok Sabha election,the Election Commission has decided to get 800 EVMs to be used for

the August 18 Assembly bypoll in Tamil Nadu certified by the Bharat Electronics Ltd BEL.

The newly purchased EVMs would be used only after a fit certificate from BEL engineers,who are busy checking the working of these machines in presence of Krishnagiri District Collector V K Shanmugam and Returning Officer A Shanmugasundaram,the EC said in a statement.

Each EVM would be allotted a code that would be registered in the computer for verification and the machines would be dispatched randomly to poling stationsin presence of election observer and candidatesonly a day before polling.

Burgur,Ilayankudi,Cumbum,Srivaikuntam and Thondamuthur,will go to bypolls on August 18.
