Centre response sought on rules for cops briefing media

Supreme Court Friday sought a detailed response from the Centre as to rules allowing police officers to brief the media in cases under investigations.

The Supreme Court Friday sought a detailed response from the Centre as to rules allowing police officers to brief the media in cases under investigations. The court expressed concerns that even a low-ranking police official freely talked to the press immediately after the arrest of an accused and asked the government about the instructions,if any,issued to them. It was hearing a PIL by advocate Surat Singh,who has sought various directions to protect the reputation of the accused in a sub judice matter.
