Even as inter-state inter-linking of rivers is stuck over the elusive consensus amongst the states, the government is now exploring the possibility of intra-state river linking for sharing and transfer of surplus water to deficit areas within the states.

The National Water Development Agency NWDA under the Ministry of Water Resources has received 36 intra-state river-linking proposals from seven states Maharashtra,Gujarat,Jharkhand,Orissa,Bihar,Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

In fact, the NWDA has already prepared pre-feasibility reports on 12 intra-state links while it plans to complete the reports of five other proposals within this year and three more by 2012. It is going to consult state governments to finalise a timeline for preparing the feasibility reports of other proposals envisaged by these state governments.

According to a list released by the Ministry,Maharashtra has proposed a maximum of 20 intra-state river linking,of which the NWDA has already completed the feasibility report of two links while it has planned to complete reports of another five links by next year.

While Bihar has proposed six intra-state links, prominent among them the Kosi-Ganga link within the state,Orissa and Jharkhand have proposed three intra-state river links for pre-feasibility study by the NWDA. While Rajasthan has proposed two intra-state links,Tamil Nadu and Gujarat have proposed one intra-state river linking project each to the NWDA.
