Weeks after cyclone Aila caused widespread destruction in Sunderbans,the Central Government on Monday constituted a Task Force to assess the damage caused to embankments and suggest remedial measures.
The announcement came a week after Mamata Banerjee met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In fact,the Water Resources Ministry,while announcing the formation of the task force,highlighted the fact that the Task Force was approved by the Prime Minister.
The nine-member team,headed by former Chairman of Central Water Commission CWC S K Das,will conduct field visits to the affected regions to assess the damage caused to the existing embankments and suggest short-term measures to prevent further breaches in the embankments and flooding of the area.
The Task Force which includes Commissioner Ganga S P Kakaran,P Kanjilal,an expert on Sunderbans,Prof Nayan Sharma of IIT-Roorkie and senior officers of CWC,Ganga Flood Control Commission,Government of West Bengal and an NGOhas also been asked to suggest long-term remedial measures.
