CAT sets aside Andhra top cops appointment

While setting aside the appointment of Reddy,the Hyderabad Bench of CAT directed the government to send a new list of senior-most IPS officers to UPSC within a week after which the government can appoint a new DGP,Kumars lawyer J Sudhir said.

The tribunal directed that the process of appointing a new DGP should be completed in three weeks.

The ruling is a major embarrassment to the Congress government as CAT has set aside two DGP appointments in a row. Last year,it set aside K Aravinda Raos appointment as DGP.

Kumar petitioned that the government violated the Supreme Court verdict in the Prakash Singh case in which it had stated that state governments should send a list of three senior-most IPS officers to UPSC for selection of the DGP.

The government responded to the petition by arguing that it wanted a DGP who had at least two years tenure left to retire and could maintain a grip on the law and order in the state.
