Almost five years after Pratibha Murthy,26,an employee with HP Globalsoft, was raped and murdered,a fast-track court on Wednesday convicted Shivakumar,a driver with the BPO firm. The sentencing has been scheduled for October 8.

The incident dates to December 13,2005,when Shivakumar picked up Pratibha from her house on the pretext of taking her to office for a late-night shift.

Pratibha did not report for work that night and was reported missing by her family the next day.

Police investigations revealed that she had last been contacted by a cab driver who claimed to have been designated to pick her up. The probe revealed that Shivakumar took his victim to a location on the outskirts of the city and raped and killed her.

The probe also revealed that Shivakumar had randomly targeted Pratibha.

The sensational murder case forced BPOs in Bangalore and around the country to introduce strong security measures, especially while transporting women employees.

Judge B V Guddali on Wednesday convicted Shivakumar of charges under section 366 kidnap, section 376 rape and section 302 murder of the Indian Penal Code.
