4 missing after Madeira flash floods kill 42
FUNCHAL: Emergency crews used bulldozers and other heavy equipment Monday to search for at least four people still missing in Madeira after flash floods and rockslides killed 42 people on the Portuguese vacation island. Rescue teams in more than 400 vehicles worked all through the night to clear tons of caked mud,boulders and snapped trees that had piled up in the capital of Funchal and other coastal communities,authorities said.
Fonseka to contest parliamentary polls
Colombo: Defeated Opposition presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka,currently under Army custody,will lead the Democratic National Alliance DNA in the April 8 parliamentary polls and contest from capital Colombo. Gen Fonseka will head the JVP-led Democratic National Alliance and will contest from Colombo district, senior JVP leader Vijitha Herath said. Anoma,the wife of Fonseka told reporters,that a decision has been taken on issue and the former army chief will heading the JVP-led alliance and contest from Colombo district.
Three killed in Iraqs Anbar province
Ramadi: Iraqi police say a car bomb targeting a police building has killed three people in the capital of Iraqs western Anbar province. The bombing comes as Iraq is preparing for March 7 parliamentary elections. Police officials say a suicide bomber exploded the car outside the Internal Affairs office in the provincial capital,Ramadi. Anbar province was considered the hotbed of the insurgency until many fighters turned against the insurgents in what is considered one of the key turning points of the war.
NRI shopkeeper killed in UK teenage gang attack
London: An Indian-origin shopkeeper in the Yorkshire town of Huddersfield was killed while trying to repel a gang of hooded teenagers who were trying to rob him. Gurmail Singh,63,suffered head injuries during the scuffle at his shop,and died of injuries at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary on Sunday. The police is treating his death as murder. The gang,all in their teens and wearing dark hooded tops and tracksuit bottoms,went into his shop on Friday night.
Endeavour ends 14-day mission to Space Station
The space shuttle Endeavour returns to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral. Endeavours landing completed a 14-day mission to the International Space Station.

Washington: Netting another big catch,Pakistans security agencies have captured a top Afghan Taliban leader following information provided by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar,Mullah Omars second in command. Mulvi Kabir,former Taliban governor in Nangahar Province,and a key figure in the Taliban regime was recently captured in Pakistan,Fox News reported. Considered to be among the top 10 most wanted Taliban leaders,Kabir was apprehended in Nawshera district of Pakistans NWFP by police forces in recent days,the Fox news said.
