3 women caned for extra-marital sex in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities in Malaysia caned three Muslim women for having extramarital sex,making them the first women in the country to receive such punishment under Islamic law,an official said on Wednesday. Another woman,Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno,a 32-year-old mother of two,was sentenced to caning last year for drinking beer. Authorities at a prison near Kuala Lumpur on February 9 caned three women who had been convicted for having sex outside of marriage,according to a Home Ministry official. It was not clear if the men who had sex with them were also caned.
Mother of Fonseka son-in-law held
Colombo: The mother of former Sri Lankan Army Chief Sarath Fonsekas son-in-law was arrested on Wednesday after the CID recovered a large sum of foreign currency from her bank account,but was later released on bail by a local court here. Asoka Tillekaratne,mother of Danuna Tillekaratne was arrested by the CID after they searched her bank account and recovered money worth Rs 75 million.
Pak accepts CJs recommendation
Islamabad: Pakistan on Wednesday said it would accept Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhrys recommendations for judicial postings,to avert a possible showdown with the Supreme Court,which had struck down the appointment of two judges. Following a meeting between Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Chaudhry,the government said a fresh notification would be issued for appointment of three judges in keeping with the Chief Justices recommendations.
Hillary spread lies in Gulf: Irans Khamenei
Tehran: Irans supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei lashed out at US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday,saying she had spread lies against Iran during a tour of the Gulf. Those who have turned the Persian Gulf into an arms depot in order to milk regional countries for money have now dispatched their official to go around the Persian Gulf and spread lies against Iran, Khamenei said.
