South Korea rejects Norths call for talks

Seoul: The two Koreas restored the cross-border Red Cross communication channel on Wednesday,even as South Korea rejected proposals by the North to resume talks in order to defuse the prevailing high tensions between the two sides. The North had cut off the Red Cross line last year when tension spiked over the sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on Pyongyang.

Clerics get threat for Taseers funeral

Lahore: Three Pakistani clerics who conducted the funeral and memorial prayers for slain Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer have received death threats,police said on Thursday. Meanwhile,a report claimed that the assassin,Mumtaz Qadri,was assigned to protect key personalities,including President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Ship carrying acid overturns in Germany

BERLIN: A ship carrying 2,000 tonnes of sulphuric acid overturned Thursday in the Rhine river,northwest of Mainz,and two members of its crew are missing,river police said. Helicopters with infrared equipment took to the air to search for the missing crew,and traffic on the river was suspended.

Suu Kyi seeks to revive party

YANGON: Aung San Suu Kyi is launching an appeal to the Supreme Court to revive her political party,National League for Democracy following her release from house arrest last year. She is challenging a ruling by the military regime that rendered her party defunct.
