Many Bollywood stars were seen exercising their voting rights at the recent Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Among them was Bollywood couple Twinkle Khanna and Akshay Kumar. In her latest article for The Times of India, Twinkle shared her witty take on the elections and revealed how she and her husband, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, who hold different political ideologies, cancel each other’s votes by voting for two different parties.
In the article, Twinkle mentioned how she had to force her daughter to go to school on voting day when all other schools were closed due to the elections. She then shared that she waved goodbye to Akshay, who stepped out of the house after casting his vote at sharp 7:15 am in the morning. Twinkle also admitted that she and Akshay had a discussion about how they cancel each other’s votes. She wrote, “We both agreed that it was completely pointless for us to vote because we would cancel each other out.” She added, “the needle swinging left and right until it landed firmly at zero.”
Twinkle also commented on Aamir Khan’s viral remark on the Marathi language. After casting his vote, Aamir was speaking to the media while standing outside the polling booth. The actor was speaking in Marathi when he was interrupted by a journalist, who asked him to speak in Hindi. Aamir resisted and said, “In Hindi? This is Maharashtra bhai.’ However, the journalist requested the actor to also give his statement in Hindi, as it would be published in Hindi-speaking states like Delhi and more.
Twinkle had a witty take on the incident and wrote, “Language is indeed, a bigger issue for the BMC than drainage.” She mentioned how the Marathi versus Hindi debate was rampant leading up to the election. She also recalled how, in 2008, the BMC tried conducting all administrative work only in Marathi. She noted how the mandate faced backlash “in every possible language” and was eventually forced to retreat. “Ideology is powerful until you have to fill out long forms,” she wrote.
Meanwhile, a video of Akshay had gone viral after he cast his vote. While he was coming out of the polling booth, a woman approached him asking for financial help. “Papa bahut bade karze mein hai, unko please bahar nikalo (My father is in a huge debt, please help him),” she said. The actor agreed to help the woman and directed her to his team.
