Krishna heads for Seoul,to discuss defence
NEW DELHI: Civilian nuclear cooperation and a fillip to the trade ties will be on agenda as External Affairs minister S M Krishna on Wednesday headed for Seoul to attend the Joint Commission meeting with South Korea. Krishna and his South Korean counterpart Yu Myung-hwan will co-chair the 6th meeting of the India-South Korea Joint Commission and explore prospects of stepping up cooperation in the defence sector,particularly in counter-terrorism.
LA officials to train elite force in Maha
MUMBAI: Maharashtra8217;s elite Force One officials and members of the disaster management unit are expected to be trained by officials from the Los Angeles LA Sheriff8217;s Department. LA Sheriff Leroy Baca is scheduled to visit Mumbai next month and a deal is to be inked between the largest law enforcement agency in the US and the state government for training officials to tackle terror. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan is in LA and met Baca.
Fillipino crew members rescued
MUMBAI: Three seriously injured foreign crew members of a Bahamas flagged merchant ship were rescued on Wednesday by the Indian Navy,after the vessel was caught in inclement weather off Mumbai coast. The crew members,all Filipinos,of super tanker MV Jana,had sent a distress call to the Indian Coast Guard,which in turn,sought Navys assistance in the evacuation.
Close shave for AI passengers again
INDORE: An Air India plane,with 140 passengers and six crew members onboard,had a close shave for the second consecutive day as it suffered a bird-hit while landing at the city airport on Wednesday. Two tyres of the same aircraft,with 106 people on board,were found deflated on landing at the Delhis Indira Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday,causing alarm. The flight took off for Bhopal after engineers declared it airworthy.
MoEF no to more helipads in Mumbai
MUMBAI: The Ministry of Environment and Forests MoEF is not in favour of new helipads coming up in the metropolis,Bombay High Court was told on Wednesday. In an affidavit filed today,R N Jindal,Additional Director in MoEF,said in view of high ambient noise levels in Mumbai both during day and night,very often in excess of prescribed standards,new helipads are avoidable. The matter will be heard next week.
Antony to visit Siachen glacier
NEW DELHI: Defence Minister AK Antony will visit the worlds highest battlefield,the Siachen glacier,next week to interact with soldiers and take a look at the ground situation. This will be his first trip to the glacier since taking over as the Defence minister for the second term. Antony,accompanied by Army Chief General VK Singh,will also visit the nearby military installations.
Class X girl delivers baby in school toilet
RAMANATHAPURAM TN: In a bizarre incident,a 15-year-old student delivered a baby inside a toilet of a private school and later abandoned it. The teenager gave birth to the baby girl early this week and was issued a transfer certificate by the institution on Tuesday after the issue snowballed into a controversy. Chief Educational Officer Balasubramanian said neither her parents nor the teachers were aware that the student was pregnant as she was very fat. On hearing the baby cry,she was taken to a hospital by the school authorities.
