NEW DELHI: The monsoon session of Parliament will begin July 26,the government announced Thursday,a week after a Cabinet recommendation to this effect. The session is likely to conclude on August 27 after 24 sittings,provided the two Houses are allowed to run smoothly. The Opposition is likely to corner the government on the issues of inflation,petrol price-hike,Maoist violence,unrest in Jamp;K ,Bhopal gas tragedy and caste census.

Bhopal leak: Jairam to head committee

NEW DELHI: Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh will head an oversight committee that will monitor the remedial measures being taken by the MP government at the site of gas disaster in Bhopal. The government on Thursday announced the creation of this 16-member committee co-chaired by Babulal Gaur,states minister-in-charge of department of relief and rehabilitation,on the recommendation of the GoM on Bhopal gas leak.

Pacheco medically fit,arrested

PANAJI: Goa8217;s former Tourism Minister Fransisco Mickey Pacheco,booked in connection with the death of his female friend Nadia Torrado,was arrested Thursday from Goa Medical College and Hospital after he was declared medically fit and discharged from a hospital here. He will now be interrogated by the Crime Branch.

Detained ship sails out of Kolkata

KOLKATA: A Karachi-bound ship,Aegean Glory Kingstown,which was detained at the Kolkata port for having military hardware and explosives on board,sailed out early on Thursday after being cleared by the customs authorities. 8220;The ship sailed out of the port early today escorted by the Customs and the Coast Guard,8221; a senior Kolkata Port Trust KoPT spokesman said.

CPM wins Durgapur by-election

DURGAPUR: The CPM on Thursday won the Durgapur Assembly seat in a by-election,defeating Trinamool Congress-backed Congress candidate by a margin of 8,817 votes. Archana Bhattacharya dubbed her victory as a reflection of 8220;people8217;s anger against Centre8217;s failure to contain inflation and hike in fuel prices,8221; and to protest against alleged Opposition 8220;terror8221; in the state.

Brake pipes of train found cut

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Raising alarm in Kerala,the air brake pipes of a passenger train were found snapped at Nilambur,a remote railway station in Malappuram district. The engine driver of the Nilambur-Shornur passenger found that the vacuum brake pipes were cut at 15 places in the train which has 11 compartments. 8220;We found that the brake pipes connecting all compartments have been snapped using a strong blade-like weapon,8221; said engine driver K Ali. State police have begun a probe led by a Deputy SP,holding forth the theory of sabotage.

Lovers bodies found,likely honour killing

CHANDIGARH: In yet another case of suspected honour killing,bodies of two lovers were recovered from a field located alongside Sanwar-Badala road under Dadri subdivision of Bhiwani district on Wednesday night. Police said that bodies of 19-year-old Ritu and 32-year-old Joginder,both residents of Sanwar village,were recovered after they were spotted by a villager. Some celphos tablets and a bottle inscribing poison was also recovered from the spot.

NHRC: Pay kin of boy killed in custody

NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission on Thursday directed the Mayawati government to pay Rs 5 lakh as monetary compensation to the family of Durgesh,12,from UP who was beaten up and then hanged by the police in 2008 in connection with a case of theft in the area.
