Student dies after caning
GUWAHATI: An eleven-year old student of Saraswati Vidya Niketan died in a private hospital here,with his parents complaining that he was caned by teachers for not completing his homework. Mausamraj Mahanta,a student of Class VI,who died of sceptic arthritis and multiple organ failure on Monday was allegedly beaten by his teacher as well as the vice principal of the school on May 25. The teacher is absconding,
said P S Mahanta,Superintendent of police.
Few takers for Mamatas KMC panel
KOLKATA: A number of eminent people named by Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee in a committee to oversee Kolkata Municipal Corporation affairs have turned down the offer,saying they were not consulted before their names were publicly announced. Prominent among those who turned down the offer are theatre activist Bibhas Chakraborty and Kolkata Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborti. The names were announced when Mamata nominated her Mayor and distributed other KMC portfolios.
Engineers murder: Son,two others held
LUCKNOW: The police claimed to have cracked the murder case of a PWD executive engineer in Jhansi on May 31,with the arrest of his 23-year-old son and two others on Tuesday. The police said Shashank 23 confessed to have hired a local gangster,Ravi Rajput,for Rs 10 lakh to kill his father Govind Singh Yadav. Govind was hacked to death in his house in Jhansi. The police claimed Shashank has revealed that the family was fed up with his fathers indifferent attitude.

PUNE: Outgoing Superintendent of Sangli police Krishna Prakash has accused Mainuddin Bagwan,former Mayor of the city,of being the mastermind of the communal riots in Miraj during the Ganesh festival in September 2009. 8220;Suspects Imran Bopari and Shahid Nadaf,arrested for their involvement in the riots,had told the Judicial Magistrate that Bagwan8217;s personal assistant Munna had instructed them to trigger the riots,8221; Prakash said.

PMK to hold further talks with DMK
CHENNAI: The PMK on Tuesday said it would hold further rounds of talks with the ruling DMK before deciding on reviving their alliance that was snapped two years ago. 8220;Alliances are not decided overnight. No to Meghalaya Music University
SHILLONG: The Centre has turned down Meghalaya8217;s proposal for setting up a world class music university in the state. State Education Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh told the Assembly on Tuesday that the proposal for the Rs 100 crore project,made by her predecessor Manas Chaudhuri,was turned down by the then Union HRD minister Arjun Singh. The Centre had suggested Assam as the location instead.
