PMs visit: Sat phone caused security scare

CHENNAI: A satellite phone,which was switched on during the recent visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to the city,caused a scare among security agencies,police said on Monday. The phone was tracked to three Israeli tourists,all women. During questioning,the trio were found to be 8220;innocent and were let off.

Bikram Singh is Eastern Army Commander

NEW DELHI: Lt Gen Bikram Singh has been appointed as the Eastern Army Commander and will take charge on March 31. He will succeed Lt Gen VK Singh,who will take over as the new Army Chief. Lt Gen Bikram Singh,who is currently the Director General Staff Duties at the Army Headquarters,will take charge of the Eastern Command at a time when there is a renewed focus to strengthen the Indo-China border region.

PRP workers attack pvt news channel

HYDERABAD: Angry workers of Praja Rajyam Party on Monday staged a protest at the office of a private news channel,alleging it was airing news reports against its chief Chiranjeevi. Some PRP workers barged into the office of ABN Andhra Jyothy and broke a few glass panes,the police said.

ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh government has taken steps to trace the six children who went missing from Phuntsok Choeling monastery in Kathmandu over a month ago,state home minister Tako Dabi said on Monday. Chief secretary Tabom Bam has been asked to contact the Union Home Ministry,External Affairs Ministry and Nepalese embassy in Delhi to find the missing children, Dabi said.

SHILLONG: After a Comptroller and Auditor General report castigated Meghalaya legislators for making fake travelling allowance claims,Speaker Charles Pyngrope on Monday referred the report to the Public Accounts Committee PAC of the Assembly for examination. The CAG report had alleged that 16 Meghalaya legislators faked travelling allowance bills and claimed Rs 1.67 crore in 2006.

Twin removed from childs stomach

HYDERABAD: Doctors at Niloufer Childrens Government Hospital performed a rare surgery and successfully removing a parasitic twin unequal conjoint twin from the stomach of a one-and-half-year-old boy.
