4 newborns die due to fault in oxygen supply
Hyderabad: Four newborns died at the Government General Hospital,Kurnool,allegedly because the oxygen supply valve in the neo-natal ward malfunctioned. The four infants born in the last couple of days were in the neo-natal ICU due to premature delivery. The Kurnool District Collector has ordered an inquiry after parents of the children alleged that oxygen supply to the ICU was disrupted and that doctors were not available when they raised the alarm.
Govinda booked for threat to producer
MUMBAI: A non-cognisable offence has been registered against Bollywood actor Govinda for allegedly abusing and threatening to kill a film producer during a meeting of the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association,police said on Wednesday. Praveen Khanna complained to police that the actor had on August 24 abused and threatened to kill him after a heated argument,said senior inspector Mangesh Pote. The actor had not yet been summoned by the police,he said,adding the argument appeared to have taken place on an issue related to a film.
Emergency landing for Air India plane
MUMBAI: An Air India plane from Jeddah with 286 passengers and crew on board on Wednesday landed under emergency conditions at the airport here following suspected hydraulic failure. All passengers were safe,an airline spokesperson said. Though the incident was described as a precautionary landing,a Mumbai airport spokesman said emergency services were activated at the airport,and the alert was withdrawn after over an hour. Man arrested for cheating job-seekers
BANGALORE: A 33-year-old man has been nabbed for allegedly cheating job-seekers of several lakhs of rupees,by promising work in an international retailing firm,police said. According to a City Crime Branch statement,Ravindra B Shetty conducted telephonic interviews of persons who had given job advertisements in newspapers,posing as a manager of Metro Cash and Carry. Duplicate confirmation letters were given to victims,who were asked to deposit money in his account. He then changed his mobile number making it difficult to trace him.
Another ex-DMK minister held
ChennaI: Senior DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu minister K Ponmudi was on Wednesday arrested in a land grabbing case. Ponmudi,former higher education minister,was arrested from his native Villupuram,the police said. He is the fourth former minister after Veerapandi S Arumugam Salem,K N Nehru Tiruchirappalli and N K K P Raja Erode to be arrested in the crackdown launched by the Jayalalithaa government. Also,several other DMK functionaries,including two MLAs and some close associates of Union minister M K Alagiri,have been arrested in the past three months.
7 hurt in police firing,lathicharge in Assam
TINSUKIA: Several persons were injured on Wednesday when police lathicharged and fired in the air to control angry locals who set ablaze two oil tankers which hit a person. The police said a local businessman Amitabh Dev was hit by an Oil India Limited tanker at Longswal on Wednesday. Angry locals at the spot set ablaze the two oil tankers while the driver with the vehicle that hit the person was absconding. Several persons sustained injuries. The situation is under control,the police said.
