Karnataka to strengthen Cow Protection Act
BANGALORE: Karnataka Cabinet Wednesday approved the more stringent Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act. The proposed law aims to make cow slaughter a cognizable offence. Those who violate the law will have to spend one to seven years in jail or pay between Rs 25,000 and Rs 1 lakh as fine,Home Minister V S Acharya said. Karnataka has since 2006 been setting aside funds in its budget to set up cow protection centres in the state to rehabilitate cattle,Acharya said.
Bofors: SC wont hear appeal early
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday shot down a plea seeking early hearing of a petition challenging the verdict of the Delhi High Court quashing criminal charges against Hinduja brothers in the Bofors pay-off case. It is not possible to give preference to your appeal unless there is something urgent, Chief Justice K G Balakrishnans Bench said when the application in this regard was mentioned before it.
TISS gangrape victim deposes before court
MUMBAI: A 23-year-old American student of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences TISS,who was allegedly gangraped by six persons in April last year,deposed in the fast track court hearing the case on Wednesday. Accused Vinamra Soni,Harshvardhan Yadav,Jashkaran Bhullar,Anish Borkataki,Dev Colabawala and Kundanraj Borgohain are facing trial under section 376 g of the IPC.
Patna stir: Pappu Yadav detained
PATNA: Police on Wednesday arrested former MP Rajesh Ranjan,alias Pappu Yadav,for trying to instigate students who have launched a stir against private coaching institutes. Police also arrested a private security guard of a coaching institute for killing Sachin Sharma in accidental firing on Tuesday.
Four detained for classmates suicide
NASHIK: Four medical students have been detained in connection with the suicide of a fellow student,police said Wednesday. Gaurav Sadanand Raut,22,a third-year student at a medical college in Adgaon allegedly strangulated himself after being ragged by his seniors. Dr Vasant Pawar,NCP MLA from Nashik and General Secretary of the college,however,said Gaurav might have ended his life for some other reason.
Girl electrocuted in school toilet
ALAPPUZHA: Fathima,a 11-year-old Class V student at St Marys School in Vattayal in Kerala,was electrocuted while she was washing hands under a tap in the school bathroom after lunch on Wednesday. Soon after the incident,locals gathered to protest the negligence of the school authorities that led to the death of the girl. Classmates tried their best,but could not save her,the police said.
Omars vehicle catches fire
JAMMU: Jamp;K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had a narrow escape when the engine of his official vehicle caught fire,filling the jeep with smoke,at Samba on Tuesday night. The fire was extinguished immediately,sources said.The CM was unhurt as the vehicles central locking system did not jam,which usually happens in case of fire,an official said. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident,sources said.
