‘Battered’ baby dies,post-mortem report awaited

A three-month-old girl,Ahuti Joshi,admitted to KEM Hospital here on September 24 after it was suspected that she was battered,succumbed to her injuries on Monday noon

A three-month-old girl,Ahuti Joshi,admitted to KEM Hospital here on September 24 after it was suspected that she was battered,succumbed to her injuries on Monday noon.

Her parents,Kalpesh and Dharmishtha,admitted Ahuti to the hospital with severe head and abdominal injuries. An X-ray and CT scan of the child revealed that she had multiple fractures on her skull.

“The paediatrics team conducted several examinations; they suspect that she was battered. Also,the parents were not able to give a plausible explanation for the injuries,” said Dr Shubhangi Parkar,academic dean and head of psychiatry department,KEM Hospital.

The girl died of a cardiac arrest around 1 pm on Monday,the doctors said. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

The girl’s parents left home on Tuesday. The house was found locked and neighbours said the family had gone to their native place. Investigating officer PSI Shashikant Ahire said they had told him on Monday that they would go to Gujarat to perform last rites of Ahuti. The police had on Monday recorded the statements of Ahuti’s parents.

The police said that as of now the case was only of accidental death,and they were probing all the angles. Bhagwan Chate,Senior Inspector,said the investigation would progress only after they get the post-mortem report.

The girl’s parents have been undergoing examination by KEM’s psychiatry department.
