Bangladeshi police arrested the suspected ringleader of a deadly border guard mutiny that killed at least 69 people, during a raid in a slum in the capital on Tuesday, officials said.
Syed Tauhidul Alam and five other border guards who were also arrested in Dhaka have all been charged with murder and arson, police said.
Authorities are still searching for more than 1,000 border guards who fled after last weeks insurrection in which the guards ambushed their commanding officers during an annual meeting at their headquarters in Dhaka.
During the mutiny,Alam emerged as the lead negotiator with the prime ministers office, winning an offer of amnesty in exchange for surrendering. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina later rescinded the amnesty deal for those directly responsible for the killings, which included Alam.
Alam and the other mutinous guards said they revolted over the guards long-standing demands for parity in pay and other perks enjoyed by army officers, who command the border forces. At least 54 army officers and some of their family members were killed and six remained missing, authorities said.
Meanwhile, military investigators launched a probe into the mutiny as they visited the site of the attack.
