Neha Dhupia, who plays Eva Braun in Gandhi To Hitler,on essaying the love interest of one of the most hated men in history, and more.
What was it like to play a historical character?
I have done my graduation in history so I was familiar with Eva Braun. As the love interest of one of the most hated men in history, her character seemed interesting.
Did you have to do a lot of homework for the role?
Theres very little information about Eva because as soon as you google her name, you get details about Hitler. But there was enough information for my stylist to understand what kind of clothes she wore, and once the look was decided,I just had to portray the emotions.
Did you discover anything about Eva?
I discovered that she was just like any other woman who was in love with her man,and wanted to be with him. This was evident when she volunteered to die with him when he decided to take his own life.
And like any woman she was also glamour-struck,because she preferred taking cyanide rather than a bullet shot so that she looked beautiful even while dying!
What according to you makes a good historical?
A historical should be entertaining and educative. Also there should be just a singular school of thought and one mans interpretation of the characters and events. Director Rakesh Ranjan has done that beautifully in Gandhi To Hitler.
Which is your favourite historical film?
When I saw Shyam Benegals Subhash Chandra Bose I was quite mesmerised by the film because I learnt a lot about him. His journey was a discovery and there was a new-found respect for him.
And who is your favourite character from history?
I have great respect for Nelson Mandela who is fantastic for the reforms he has made socially, economically and politically.
Did Anupam Khers leaving the film affect it adversely?
Anupam Kher was on board when I signed the film and I thought he was a great choice. But when he opted out,the producers approached Raghuveer Yadav who had just delivered Peepli Live and is an excellent actor in his own right. I can only say,one mans loss is another mans gain.
What attracted you to do Param Veer Chakra,a Telugu film?
As long as a movie is entertaining, the language does not matter, and I am open to such offers.
What about television?
Television is a great way to get in touch with your fans and I do want to be part of it. But I need something which reflects my personality,is vivacious and a lot of fun. My recent appearance on UTV Bindass where I dated 10 guys at a time was good!
What are your forthcoming projects?
There is Saurabh Shuklas Pappu Cant Dance Saala with Vinay Pathak. Also theres a thriller,Raftaar 24X7 with Emraan Hashmi which is really good. I hope it releases soon.
