In yet another attack on panchayat members, unidentified gunmen killed a sarpanch in north Kashmir on Sunday. The attack came a month after a sarpanch was killed and a woman panch wounded in Sopore.

Javid Ahmad Wani,40,was killed in his native village Kalantra in Baramulla. Sources say the unidentified men fired at Wani from a close range and he was hit in the abdomen twice. Wani was rushed to Sub District Hospital Kreeri, where he succumbed to injuries. Wani was associated with the ruling National Conference.

On January 11,unidentified militants killed sarpanch Habibullah Mir,60,at Goripora village of Bomai in Sopore. On the same day, unidentified men also shot at and wounded a woman panch in Hardushiva village of Sopore. The attacks had triggered fear among the members of panchayats and a large number of panchs and sarpanchs had resigned in north Kashmir.

In Wagoora block, this is the second killing of a sarpanch in past six months. On September 23 last year,a sarpanch,Mohammad Shafi Teli, was killed at Nowpora village of the block.
