Even as the Manipur government tried to provide protection to migrant workers from other states from being targeted by armed militant groups,a migrant worker was shot dead in the heart of Imphal. With this five migrants have been killed in the state this month.

The person has been identified as Madan,a resident of Bihar who was working as a bakery products vendor here. According to reports,two motorcycle-borne persons first tried to whisk him away from outside the bakery store for which he worked. As Madan ran into the shop,one of the persons fired at him. He succumbed to wounds on way to the hospital.

While two migrant workers were killed by unidentified gunmen in Imphal on December 15,two others were killed three days later. With Saturdays s incident,the number of migrant workers killed in the strife-torn Northeastern state has risen to 31 this year.

It was only on December 18 that the government opened a temporary shelter for migrant workers of Imphal city at the local dharamshala and provided for security cover to them there. While about 150 migrant workers,mostly daily-wagers moved in to the shelter,scores of others were still living in different markets where they work.

Meanwhile,two Airtel employees were abducted by some suspected militants from the heart of Imphal city on Saturday evening. Reports from Imphal said K Joychandra and T Oken were abducted after they refused to pay a sum of Rs 1 crore demanded by the group.
