Since May 16, private buses from West Bengal have taken back 35,000-40,000 workers, charging about Rs 6,500 per passenger, according to Ranjeet Datta, president, Paschim Bangal Welfare Association. “Most workers are not paying themselves, instead their employees are paying for the trip,” he said.

“At least 50-60 per cent of the migrants, who had earlier registered themselves for returning to their natives states, are not turning up at the railway stations. The Indian Express spoke to ten labourers across several states, and found that only one of them received pending wages preceding the lockdown. During the lockdown period, none got paid — none expected to either. All they hoped for was to get the pending wages for the time that they had worked.
