The Intensive Therapy Unit ITU of the main building of the AMRI Hospital, where about a dozen of the survivor patients were shifted from the annexe building, was bursting at the seams with people on Friday. Relatives of the patients, policemen, mediapersons or just plain onlookers they were all there. Except for senior doctors.
The most important unit of any hospital, which serves as a last-ditch point to save a mans life, was struggling with just a couple of junior doctors as all senior doctors had fled, leaving the relatives as well as nursing staff fuming.
I have been trying to get in touch with sir the doctor on what medicines to administer to my patients. But they are not even taking our calls, a senior nurse, who did not want to be named, told The Indian Express. I cannot understand what medicines to give to the patients who have been brought here. Their files are not kept here. I wanted to go the annexe building to collect documents regarding their treatment but my colleagues stopped me.
Ashok Maity,of Begumpara in Hooghly, whose brother-in-law Kalyan Samanta received a pacemaker on Thursday, said,All doctors have fled. Only two-three doctors who are very junior are attending to the patients. I was trying to get in touch with our doctor but I could do it only through the help of a police officer.
The junior doctors too appeared helpless. They requested the relatives to take away their patients. I was told to take my patient but if I take him out he will die, said Gaur Bhowmik,of Howrah.
The chaos at the hospital was such many relatives of patients spent the entire day looking for them. There were patients whose names did not figure either in the list of deceased or in the list of those shifted to other hospitals.
There were also allegations of the body of one person being handed over to another persons relatives. The relatives of Aparna Chatterjee,a patient whose name figured in the list of deceased, claimed that the body handed over was of some other person.
Satyabrata Upadhyay,vice-president of AMRI,however, said that they were trying their best to manage things. See,it is a colossal tragedy. But we are trying our best to manage things, he said.
