Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday urged security agencies to improve their capabilities and update their skills to effectively deal with new threats from terrorists.
Speaking at the Raising Day function of the Special Protection Group,Singh said the role of security agencies in ensuring peace and stability was being better understood and appreciated in the altered security scenario in the country.
The threat of terrorism has acquired new dimensions. Todays terrorism recognises no borders and transcends geographical limits8230; The new generation of terrorists possesses far greater capability to create networks for sharing knowledge,skills and resources. They have acquired state-like military capabilities in their fighting strategies and tactics, he said.
Singh said the number of important dignitaries at risk from terrorists has been rising and this is a cause of major concern for governments across the globe.
India is no exception8230; The role of our security agencies in ensuring peace and stability is better appreciated today than ever before.
There is,however,no doubt that the police and security authorities can be more effective if they further improve professional standards and build better infrastructure, he said.
