Adobe to halt Flash Player development for mobile browsers

Adobe has announced that it is discontinuing development of Flash plug-in for mobile browsers.

Adobe Systems has announced that it is discontinuing the development of its Flash Player plug-in for mobile browsers.

We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser,OS version or device configurations, ZDNet quoted Adobe as telling developers.

Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates, the company added.

The report said that the company would instead focus on tools that allow Flash developers to create mobile apps by packaging their code to run on Adobes AIR platform.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the move would be a major blow to Android device makers, who have long touted Flash compatibility as a key competitive advantage over Apple8221;s iPhone and iPad.

It would also mark a posthumous vindication for former Apples visionary leader Steve Jobs, who did not support Flash on Apples mobile products, the paper said.

The move comes in the wake of a broader restructuring at Adobe, which announced earlier on Tuesday that it was cutting 750 jobs and resorting its priorities.

Adobe didnt specifically call out this move, though it said that it was increasing its investment in HTML5,and focusing Flash resources on delivering the most advanced PC web experiences, including gaming and premium video,as well as mobile apps.
